Notes: The Devil’s Footprints, John Burnside
The Devil’s Footprints is set in a small Scottish seaside town called Coldhaven, so I think it’s safe to say fair warning is given. This short novel by poet Burnside is austere and elegant and terribly grim, and while I liked it, I can’t imagine it inspiring love in any reader. Which is to say, I recommend the book, but only if you can bear the tension of a slowly tightened tourniquet.
