If you can’t beat laser cat, you probably deserve to die.

Mat Honan, “How Yahoo Killed Flickr and Lost the Internet”

If you haven’t already read it, just a terrific piece on … the title sums it up nicely. I’m a tech tourist—at best. But I do know mergers & acquisitions, and Honan’s summary of Yahoo’s colossal fuckup during integration sounds entirely likely. Visit Flickr these days and it feels dried out and desperate, the web equivalent of the Salton Sea.

But it’s too bad about Yahoo. Even though I have something like eight gmail addresses, I still use Yahoo for my primary personal email account. Less noise, all-around better experience for this user—I don’t need no fancy stuff. Plus, when it comes to mining mail content for nefarious purposes, Yahoo can be relied on to fumble that ball. Google, I wager, is already efficiently channeling the stuff into a secret joint government/corporate-interest database.
